Why Use a Hair Loss Shampoo?
I like many other people (most hopefully) wash my hair every day or two.
Why not then, use a shampoo to treat your hair loss while washing your hair?
Most shampoos for sale these days set out to solve some sort of problem, whether it be dry hair, maintaining color or dandruff.
Equally, there are an abundance of shampoo products on the market that claim to help stop hair loss and stimulate hair growth. But do they work? and which is the best hair loss shampoo?
Suffering from hair loss myself I have tried many of these products. Some with success and others with absolutely awful results.
As the easiest treatments to use, shampoos are generally the first option for people who are only just beginning to lose their hair. However, it is important for everyone that suffers from hair loss to incorporate a hair loss shampoo into their treatment regime.
How Do Hair Loss Shampoos Work?
Shampoos for hair loss work in two ways:
- To reduce inflammation and infection in the scalp – this promotes a healthy environment for hair to grow and;
- To reduce or block the effects of hormonal changes in the scalp that cause hair follicles to shrink and shut down.
Every shampoo and its ingredients are unique and target the above two problems in different ways. It is therefore not surprising that when many people go to buy a hair loss shampoo that they become a bit overwhelmed.
The hair loss shampoo reviews below highlight the products that I have had measurable success with. One of the products Pura D’Or Gold Label I still use daily as a part of my treatment regime.
One thing to note is that hair loss shampoos are incredibly important when using drug treatments like Minoxidil solution or Finasteride. The reason for this is that hair loss shampoos contain the active ingredient ‘Ketoconazole‘.
Ketoconazole has been used as an off-label treatment for alopecia for many years. The anti-fungal properties of ketoconazole reduce scalp microflora and as a consequence help to reduce hair follicle inflammation that contributes to alopecia.
Ketoconazole kills all bacteria and fungus cells on the scalp. It allows a deeper penetration of hair loss drugs and creates an ideal scalp environment for these drugs to work.
For the price and ease of use, hair loss shampoos make a great treatment option for anyone suffering from hair loss.
The Best Hair Loss Shampoo
Pura D’Or Gold Label
There is a reason this shampoo is and has been number one on the Amazon best sellers list for many years. With over 12,000 customer reviews and an overall 4.5-star rating. It is a very effective and reliable hair loss product.
Pura D’or is an all natural, organic product with all of its active ingredients being synthesised from plant products. It contains a low/medium percentage (0.9%) of Ketoconazole, meaning it is easy on your scalp and will not react harshly for the majority of people.
The core ingredients include pumpkin and black cumin seed oil, nettle, biotin and caffeine in the form of green tea. These compounds have been proven to reduce the scalps sensitivity to DHT.
Unlike Pura D’or blue label, the gold does not contain phenoxyethanol as a preservative (which some people claim to be rather rough on their hair).
The smell and texture of the shampoo is amazing. Other hair loss shampoos can smell like something right out of a chemistry lab.
The Argan oil in the shampoo helps to fight a dry and flaky scalp and also moisturises dry hair.
One thing I recommend for hair loss shampoos is that they contain ZINC PYRITHIONE (‘ZnP’). ZnP is the ultimate badass chemical compound that kills bacteria and fungus cells. It will stop any sort of scalp infection dead in its tracks. It is important for hair loss to maintain a healthy scalp (it is after all where you hair follicles live).
Pura D’or also includes Biotin which is a B group vitamin that promotes keratin synthesis (the protein hair is made out of). Biotin not only promotes hair growth and thickness but also strengthens both your hair and nails.
Pura D’Or Blue Label is a very close second. Unlike the gold label, the blue only contains 12 of the 15 DHT blocker compounds and uses alcohol-based preservatives as mentioned above. However, the blue label still has the great smell and texture of the Gold and the differences are very subtle.
The one downside I found with the product is that there are minimum suds when lathering the shampoo through your hair. Now this is just me being very picky.
Lipogaine Big 3 Premium Hair Loss Prevention
Lipogaine Big 3 Shampoo has a DHT blocking formula that is very similar to Pura D’Or. It has been voted the number 1 hair loss shampoo for men and woman since 2012.
In terms of smell and texture, Lipogaine is great. While it does not smell as good as the Pura D’Or (Personal preference here), it does have a really nice Aroma. The shampoo lathers perfectly and in terms of effectiveness for treating hair loss it is much the same.
Lipogaine Big 3 Shampoo is scientifically formulated so that the DHT blocking compounds work symbiotically with the Ketoconazole. This helps to create the ideal environment for new hair to grow.
The shampoo combats hair loss in two ways:
1 – It reduces the scalps sensitivity to the DHT hormone that shrinks and shuts down hair follicles;
2 – It moisturises and protects your hair that you have. It contains both Argan oil and Emu oil to moisturise and soothe your scalp.
Ultrax Labs Hair Surge
Ultrax Labs Hair Surge is another great hair loss shampoo. It is more of a premium label ‘salon grade’ shampoo, with very effective ingredients and smell (but as always these come with a price).
What you do pay for is a premium range, quality product that is consistent and works. Ultrax Labs Hair Surge was the ‘top rated 2015 shampoo for hair regrowth stimulation‘ and was voted ‘the most effective topically available shampoo formula for men and women.’
Being one of the first hair loss shampoos I used, my initial results were very good. I noticed a reduction in ‘scalp burn’ and hair fall within a few weeks.
Hair surge has three active compounds:
Hair surge has a very similar combo of active ingredients to Lipogaine and Pura D’or, however, the concentration of Ketoconazole is 0.2% and the shampoo is a lot more gentle on the scalp and hair than the other two shampoos.
I prefer the texture and smell of Hair Surge to Lipogaine. The only thing I dislike with Hair Surge is its price. If it were cheaper I would consider purchasing it over Pura D’or.
One really cool thing about Hair Surge is that it has a conditioner called ‘Hair Solace‘ that compliments the shampoo.
Hair Solace has the same caffeinated ingredients as Hair Surge but also contains natural oils, chamomile, and eucalyptus. These compounds will help sooth scalp inflammation and leaves your hair feeling soft and strong. The feeling after using the conditioner is like you have used a professional salon grade hair product (and it smells great too).
Bosley Hair Growth Shampoo
In fact, with their patented LifeXtend formula of DHT blocking ingredients, Bosley Hair Growth Shampoo claims to be more effective than any other shampoo on the market. This is a HUGE claim.
The main ingredient included in the LifeXtend formula is Saw Palmetto. Saw Palmetto is an effective and widely used DHT blocker in hair loss products. It is known by the hair loss community as “nature’s Propecia.”
Bosley Hair Growth Shampoo’s point of difference comes down to the inclusion of pentapeptides. Pentapeptides are the ingredients used in most ‘Anti-wrinkle’ creams.
Bosley claims that these chemicals help to improve scalp health and increase the production of collagen. A decrease in collagen is what causes our skin to age and hair follicles to shut down and produce thinner and weaker hair.
With regard to the shampoos benefits for hair loss, I didn’t notice too much of a difference between this shampoo and the shampoos above. However, this is not a bad thing as it still works!
Art Naturals Organic Argan Oil Hair shampoo is marketed as a hair loss shampoo, although I feel like the shampoo is more of an ‘extensive hair care’ shampoo. It utilises the power of Argan Oil which has a bucket load of benefits for dandruff and scalp health. The team at regrowthsolution have written an article on the effectiveness of Argan Oil here.
This shampoo is a premium organic, all natural product with every single oil and anti-hair loss plant based ingredient you could ever imagine packed into the bottle.
I’m serious here… check out the list of ingredients:
As you can see there are not any of the ‘regular’ DHT blocker compounds you would normally expect in a hair loss shampoo. However in terms of hair treatment and keeping your hair and scalp healthy this product is really good.
I would describe this shampoo as a hair detox. In fact, when using a higher percentage ketoconazole based shampoo like Pura D’Or or Lipogaine, I alternate with this shampoo (one day Keto shampoo, one day Argan Oil).
The overwhelming benefit of this shampoo is its suds and amazing smell. The way it makes your hair feel is also a massive plus. Very strong and silky.
This shampoo would be very well suited for someone with very damaged or brittle hair.

That all comes down to personal preference, do you want something natural and organic? Do you want an awesome smelling premium product? or do you want a cheap product jammed with hair loss fighting chemicals?
