Nioxin is an incredibly popular hair loss treatment that has been around since 1986. The company was founded by a woman called Eva Graham. She developed Nioxin as a hair loss treatment after losing hair during and after childbirth.
Since then, due to the amazing results and popularity of the product. The company has since been taken over by Procter and Gamble.
The product range has grown to multiple products from shampoos, styling masques, conditioners and more. The product is salon grade quality and is often sold as a hair ‘thickening’ treatment in many upmarket salons.
In this article, the team at Regrowth Solution put Nioxin to the test. Does it work as a hair loss treatment? If so how well?
What is Nioxin?
The Nioxin product range is made up of six hair care systems. Each of these Nioxin systems contains three treatments:
- Nioxin Cleanser (shampoo);
- Nioxin Scalp Therapy (conditioner) and;
- Nioxin Scalp Treatment (which is left in the hair after washing.)
Which system you used is based on a number of factors, for example, whether your hair is clinically treated, whether it is course or the severity of the thinning.
The systems are easy to follow and are used just like regular shampoos and conditioners.
How does Nioxin Work?
Nioxin hair loss shampoos are not advertised as a hair loss treatment. On their website they claim that:
NIOXIN uses advanced technologies to deliver thicker, fuller, denser-looking hair. NIOXIN’s advanced technologies provide real solutions for making the most of the hair you have.
So how does Nioxin work for hair loss?
While it is not a magic bullet, the shampoo does have some excellent hair thickening benefits.
The treatments primary focus is to unblock hair follicles on the scalp. The shampoo actively removes, dirt, debris, and sebum.
Sebum commonly contains high concentrations of dihydrotestosterone (‘DHT’). This is the hormone associated with pattern hair loss.
The shampoo also contains some of the best herbal treatments for androgenic alopecia (pattern hair loss). These include nettle extract, biotin, B-vitamins, Saw Palmetto and serenoa serrulata extract. These have all shown promise in preventing the aromatization of DHT in the scalp and preventing hair follicles from shutting down.
How Long Before I see Results?
On their website, the company claims that you should notice visibly thicker hair within 30 days of using the three step treatments.
Customers of Nioxin generally see the full effects of the product at around the 3-month mark. The health benefits of the treatment for your scalp and the cosmetic effects on your hair can be noticed after just a few washes.
- The product is inexpensive;
- Incredibly easy to follow the three step process;
- Made from all natural ingredients – no harsh chemicals;
- Almost instant results for scalp health and cosmetic effects.
- Treatment options for every hair type.
- Not aimed directly at hair loss, but instead used to thicken hair;
- Nioxin discourages use of Rogaine while using the treatment;
- Results only last while using Nioxin.
Nioxin Shampoo Review
First off let us say that this product is meant for men and women who are looking for a cosmetic treatment for thickening hair and NOT to treat the underlying cause of hair loss.
The video below by Dr. Neda excellently explains how the different Nioxin products work.
We put each Nioxin system to the test. Although you can buy Nioxin as standalone products, we used the systems as intended (as a pack).
Nioxin System 1
This is a system that is used for hair that is very slightly thinning. The Nioxin System 1 claims to prevent hair breakage while providing a moisturizing effect to the hair and an unbeatable shine.
Our reviewers found this system to be a very high-quality salon grade shampoo. No noticeable thickening of the hair was present. But the shampoo had a salon grade quality and left the hair and scalp feeling healthy.
Nioxin System 2
This system is aimed at noticeably thinning, fine and natural hair. This is the next step up from the Nioxin System 1. The Nioxin System 2 claims to protect hair from damage and work effectively to thicken hair.
Our reviewers noticed a substantial increase in both the volume and thickness of their hair when using this system. While this thickness is, of course, cosmetic, it made a huge difference to how the hair looks and feels.
Nioxin System 3 & Nioxin System 4
Nioxin System 5 & Nioxin System 6
These systems lathered like crazy when applied. The effect of the hair thickness was very noticeable, and the hair feels very very soft after washing.
For the price, we were incredibly impressed with the quality of this shampoo and the way it made our hair feel.
Does Nioxin Work for Hair Loss?
No, it does not. Nioxin is not advertised to treat hair loss directly (and for good reason). However, for thickening hair and as a cosmetic treatment option, it is an excellent product.
Nioxin, while touted on the internet as a great hair loss treatment, is in fact not a hair loss treatment at all. Instead, it is one of the most effective and high-quality cosmetic treatments available to thicken the hair you have.
When reviewing the Nioxin shampoos we started as skeptics and came out the other end very impressed.
For its price, it will be difficult to find a better quality product that is a salon grade shampoo.
